Lava Expedition Hilo

Think lava rocks? Set yourself up for some explosive fun with this guided Kilauea trek!

Start out with a scenic trip to Hilo where you'll travel between the looming peaks of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. Afterwards, you'll continue on to the Puna District, home of the destination Volcano.

On foot, conquer terrain that features jagged black lava grounds. With luck, you'll locate an active eruption site for a surreal glimpse at the Earth's seeping insides.

A picnic lunch atop a lava flow will keep your own fire fueled, and with a professional guide by your side, you won't have to sweat the small stuff!

Just, you know, the molten hot stuff.

Note: Red-lava flow sightings aren't guaranteed. Closed-toe shoes are required. Participants must be able to hike across uneven terrain in the dark for several hours and miles. All children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. This is a very strenuous tour that includes a 8-9 mile hike where guests will be expected carry up to 15lbs of supplies and water. Please let us know if anyone has past/present heart conditions, asthma, or has had any recent surgeries.
