Lava Expedition (Kona/Waikoloa)

Trying to heat things up in Hawaii? Nothing a sweaty hike through a lush tropical forest can't help with.

And some molten lava, of course.

Kick off a day of sultry adventure with a drive along Saddle Road between the looming peaks of the Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea volcanoes as you make your way to the town of Hilo. After a quick provision stop, you'll head for the Kilauea Volcano where you'll continue on foot.

Safely led by a National Park Service-certified guide, head off in search of active lava flows. Cover several miles trekking over both gravel road and uneven swaths of black lava. While live lava flows cannot be guaranteed, a connected guide means a great chance of finding them if they are out there.

Keep your own rumbles at bay with an included picnic-style lunch.

Return after dark inspired, charged, and totally fired up for the night ahead!

Note: Please indicate in the special requests box the name of hotel where you are staying. Closed-toe shoes are required. Participants must be able to hike across uneven terrain in the dark for several hours and miles. All children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. This is a very strenuous tour that includes a 8-9 mile hike where guests will be expected carry up to 15lbs of supplies and water. Please let us know if anyone has past/present heart conditions, asthma, or has had any recent surgeries.
