Explore the village of Hilo, and check out the black rock of Kalapana, on whose grounds a village once stood. Visit the famed Painted Church, which was twice moved to evade encroaching lava flows. Walk the black sand beaches of Kaimu Bay, and travel the Puna coastline to MacKenzie State Park. There, visit a heated cove, and swim or snorkel among tropical marine life.

Lava Tree State Park is also on the agenda. Marvel at trees burned from the inside out, and turned into moss-covered petrified oddities. Plus, keep your own fire fueled with a traditional Hawaiian-style BBQ lunch, complete with complimentary beer and champagne.
