I have to be honest in saying that the reviews i see do not represent the tours i went on.
First the grand tour was a good and was given by Paul. Who took us into the the Rockefeller Church the best part in my opinion. Very impressed.
The downtown area tour i went on was given by Manny. This guide was informative and entertaining. He had everyones attention and hardly ever stopped talking. He gives you facts, folklore, architecture. Sad to see no reviews about this tour.

I went on the North Side Tour and it left a lot to be desired. First of all, our guide Fred was awful. I don't think he's been in Chicago that long. He stared at his phone most of the time, and then at the end of the tour he stood in front of the bus door with a big box that said tips. I would never tip for such a bad experience. I would not recommend this tour to anyone.

I usually find Gray line tours to be a great introduction to a city I've never visited & make a point to take the most comprehensive one early in my trip. The 4 hour Grand tour seemed like a winner in theory, but a horrible guide made the experience nearly unbearable.
Driver did a great job & somewhat deflected guide Fred's bad attitude & lack of skill/info. Fred was the worst tour guide I've ever encountered. Any sparse tidbits of meaningful insight about the city had to be sifted from between infinite "you all", "actual"' "particular", and "you guys". He repeatedly directed attention to the right or left when the sight was on the other side. Multiple times, referred to an event or location as if a widely known fact, had to ask him to elaborate on what the heck he was talking about (St Valentine's Day massacre, for example). He often used the wrong word & obscured the point he was trying to make (world's fair arts "expedition", "impressionalistic" artists.)
I considered bailing out at the midpoint & wish I had.
There were lots of visitors from other countries on the bus, and I found myself wanting to apologize to them for Chicago & the U.S. for the impression they must have gotten. It was unprofessional and embarrassing.
I can imagine the combo north/south city tour would be impressive & informative with a decent guide, but with Fred it was a total waste of time & money.

We booked the 4 hour Grand Tour which was 2 hours north and 2 hours south - never again! The pickup was late, doorman old us Grayline notoriously late always. Then sat on bus for another 30 minutes waiting for more people. Saw nothing of interest, taken to lots of stadiums and museums not sensible information on anything. Then back to discharge people and pick up more people for the other half of tour. I have never been so glad to get off a bus ever, some people left earlier, they were wise. This tour was run by American Sightseeing for Grayline and it does not do justice to Chicago sadly.

As first time visitors to Chicago we looked forward to an overview of the city from the gray-line Grand Tour, a 4 hour guided trip through north and south Chicago. It was terrible because the guide had a staccato style of speaking that made him hard to understand. I got about 20 per cent of what he said. Find another tour.

We took the Gray Lines Inside Chicago - Grand Tour - and it was extensive. Almost four hours and seems as if we saw most that chicago has to offer. There were only two stops along the way and they were welcome stops. We believe in Gray Lines Tours to help orient us when we first visit a city - and this did not disappoint.
