Went to see The Truce/Da Vinci at a 9pm show... one of the best sketch improv shows I've been to. Super talented teams, everyone fully committed to character and the writing was excellent. I laughed so hard my stomach hurt.
The sushi skits nearly had me in tears.
Thanks for a great night! Great job!

This place is amazing. Fantastic comedy, inexpensive drinks & no 2-drink minimum. Every night of the week has some cool stuff going on, but if go on a Wednesday, Thursday or Saturday, prepare to have your mind blown by the level of improv skill. You'll swear the show you see was scripted.
And depending on the night and the show, you may very well see a handful of legendary improvisers perform. Paul Vaillancourt's Man vs. Movie, Beer Shark Mice, Quartet & Dasariski to name a few.
It's a great place for a cheap and super fun date too.

First Bar I went to on my 21st birthday and really enjoyed my time there. The vibe was great they really welcomed me into the bar. Drinks are affordable and they were having a cage match Lmaooo it's was dope.

I love iO West! The staff is fantastic, the drinks are affordable and the shows are the best in town. If you're new to the improv world or a comedy expert (should there be such a thing) I highly recommend checking out some shows and classes. One of my favorite shows is The Resistance on Friday nights, which is an improvised action movie.
I've had some great teachers here too. They care about your progress and change your perspective as an improvisor.
Check this place out!

Over the past few months I have taken a wide variety of classes at iO West, from sketch writing to improv to television writing! I've really enjoyed my time at iO West and truly believe that it's a place where students can grow, learn, gain confidence and have fun. I have taken a total of five courses at iO West and am currently enrolled in my sixth course. What's really great about iO West is that the teachers, students and all around iO community want to see you succeed. Every class I have been in has been such a supportive, helpful and positive environment. I really feel as if I have learned a lot and have improved as a comedy writer/improviser in my time at iO West. Additionally, there are also a lot of opportunities to perform at iO West including: improv jams, class shows, sketch/improv teams, open mic nights and many more! I would highly recommend classes at iO West to anyone!

Take classes here!
Every teacher I've had has been excellent. They really know their subject matter and genuinely care about the growth and development of their students! iO does a really great job about giving their students ample opportunities to perform too! There's plenty of jams, class shows and things like Honor Roll and the Lottery. iO seriously has great teachers and great shows! It's a no brainer considering how much more affordable it is as compared to the other major theaters in LA.

i've been taking class at IO for over a year now and love the program. I have studied at all of the improv schools around town but IO really knows how to teach long form improv. They allow there students to be creative and bring all elements from other schools into the perform. If you want an amazing community, great teachers and want to make great friends start at IO!
sam m.Musical Improv Jam January 13, 2016
I really enjoy iO. I took Level 1 & 2 intensive in December and am now in Level 3. I had two great teachers that I got to see perform and see around the theater all the time. It really feels like a community. Plus it's the only improv theaters with a bar that I know of. Easy to get in to most shows, lots of jams and open mics for students, and best of all everyone's really grounded and there to learn. I took a class at UCB a while back and it felt like a lot of pressure. iO is the opposite - it's making improv easy. I took some TV writing classes there as well and highly recommend them. Check it out!
Alec R.Top Story Weekly News-Driven Improv January 10, 2016
I took an awesome improv class at iO, and will be continuing to take improv classes there. I've done a good deal of improv at other theaters and taken other workshops and classes, so I can honestly say that the quality of teaching was impeccable. The theater is trying to build and grow the comedy community in a way that is really special. The class didn't emphasize any sort of "how to" philosophy about comedy or improv, but really took a fundamental approach that got at the root of improv. I had a lot of fun, laughed constantly, and felt challenged ina really productive way.
Similarly, all the people in my classes have been awesome. I've stayed in touch with a bunch and am always excited to go see a show with the crew. I moved to LA relatively recently, so it was a nice way to meet some folks as well. More friends! Hooray!
Highly recommend giving a class a shot. Really fun way to think, great people, wonderful teachers, in an absolutely judgement free environment.

Absolutely the best place for long form improv. This is also one of the best places to take a class. I have been attending shows for twenty years, and I have cast my projects by just grabbing people from good improv teams. Whether you're a student or just in Hollywood and looking for unique experience as an audience member, check them out.
Brian K.King Ten Original Improv January 8, 2016
There are some weeks where things are not going well and others filled with highlights large and small. Nevertheless, when I'm taking improv classes they're always one of the major things I look forward to... even sometimes more than getting or going to a good gig or a party, improv is so much fun and often provides the best opportunity to "get it out there" as freely as possible. The school is replete with opportunities and events and places and people to go (to). And there's a bar! How good is that! Not all the shows are the best, admittedly, but the good ones are as good and funny as anything you'll see in the city. And since it's LA, and it's comedy, that translates as the world. And they're like ten bucks, and with a student id or coupon (not hard to find) or what have you they're usually less. A great spot in Hollywood.
Patty O.Opening Night! The Improvised Musical January 6, 2016
When I decided that I was going to go back to acting, I had asked a friend who is a comedy agent where should I go if I want to take great improv classes. She had highly recommended iO West and I decided to give it a shot. After my first level 1 class with Brian O'Connell, I knew I was in the right place. Firstly, all of the teachers at the school (regardless of level) are VERY approachable and eager to answer any questions that we as students have. In a city where there are a lot of big egos around, iO West is the one place where I feel like they make it a point to be as humble as possible. This made me feel so confident as a student, and and adding that to my improv curriculum I feel very nurtured as a student! I took my level 2 with Barry Hite, again amazing teacher with nothing but constructive and always positive feedback to give to all students! My level 3 was with Brian Jack, who is so passionate about improv that it helped our energy as students! At times we didn't even feel like we were in actual class because everything was not only FUN but also challenging (in a great way). I'm currently taking level 4 and plan to go ALL the way iO! I personally think iO West has the BEST classes, curriculum, and teachers at the theater. I've always felt supported when entering into class or going to see a show. LOVE THIS PLACE. And also classes are very inexpensive for everything that you're getting! Learning improv at iO West has definitely made me a better more fearless actress and it definitely shows in my auditions and my work. Do yourself a favor and sign up for classes because you will not regret it! Also- improv is great to learn PERIOD regardless of what line of work that you're in- so just. DO IT.
Sarah W.Opening Night! The Improvised Musical December 7, 2015
I am currently taking improv classes at iOwest and I couldn't recommend it more. If you are in it to improve your acting or to hone the art of improvisation, iO has one of the BEST programs around. The teachers all perform and direct at the theater, so they are incredibly knowledgeable and hilarious.

One of my favorite places in LA! When I moved to LA I was debating where to take improv classes. I checked out show classes at UCB (was very disappointed, they were all so in their heads) and then went to check out iO West. I was won over immediately! My first level was with improv legend Paul Vaillancourt, if you are looking for a professional improv classes this is the place. Paul was amazing, in no less than a couple a classes I already felt more comfortable and confident on stage then I felt in years! I was planning on only taking the first level but I was hooked! I continued through the level enjoying every teacher and coach I had the chance to work with. As I moved on through the levels I realized how much improv has improved my life:
Socially, the theater and the people in it started to feel like home - a place I could go out to, whenever I need a second to breath and always find someone to talk and laugh with. Everyone is so warm and passionate it's infectious! I love how relaxed and down to earth they all are and believe it is the perfect atmosphere to play and grow. I get to see amazing performers almost every night of the week such as: King Ten, Cook County Social Club, HeyDay, The Reckoning, Quartet (with Jack McBrayer) and so many more!
At work, I was able to react to new changes and demands faster without panicking. I stopped being frustrated with obstacles and started thinking about solutions.
As an actor, I started to feel way more comfortable in auditions, knowing that whatever happens I will be able to handle it! It also keeps me constantly acting, with so many options to perform (Honor Roll, Lottery, Jam, Cage Match and more..) it's really up to you! I got to meet so many industry professionals, develop connections and get advice - all in the most genuine way! If you are looking for an outlet to your creativity this is the place to be!
Bottom line: Best improv place in town, amazing community, legendary teachers and they have a BAR!

I am now in the Level 3 Improv class, and WOW! I'm having so much fun! I've been doing improv for many years, but I've learned many new valuable skills with iO, including the different formats and methods of the harold. The people at iO are very friendly, and I feel very welcome there. I will definitely continue on through all of the levels of improv classes and I highly recommend them !

iO West is like a little underdog. It has some really amazing improvers and some drinks. It is extremely laid back and it has a really good theater. This is honestly the best place to just relax and enjoy a drink.

With the IO West guidance and support doors can really open for you and your career. You learn a ton and you have fun doing it. Don't get me started on the shows. It's to the point you might pee in your pants. ( No, I'm serious you might pee a little) I've been to several shows and they have all been hilarious. So do yourself a favor and check out the iO. Bring friends, your parents, cousins, or even go by yourself!!!! Just check it out, you won't regret it!!!

I started taking classes at iO shortly after moving to LA, and I am beyond grateful for the experiences I've had here and the doors it has opened for me as an actor.
First, actor stuff: Before taking classes at iO, I had taken one or two improv classes as a part of my BFA, but I was definitely not comfortable with the whole improv thing. Level 1 got me hooked, and as I made my way through the program, not only did I fall in love with improv, I noticed an immense improvement in all of my auditions. Taking improv classes helped me find my comedic voice and settle in to my type, but it also helped me to become comfortable just being myself. iO is great about getting their students up on stage and performing ASAP. I have the opportunity to perform several times a month on the mainstage and in the other theatres as well! Also, the relationships I've formed at iO have led me to auditions for network pilots and television shows AND gotten me booked on an FX sitcom. Woo!
On a personal level, the friends I've made at iO are kick ass. I am excited to go to class every week because I get to play with my friends. The community of students, teachers and performers at iO is supportive, down to earth and hilarious, and I couldn't be happier with the group of people I surround myself with. I definitely feel as though I've found my place of people who "get me" in a city that can often feel gigantic and lonely.
Long story short, iO is great. Take classes. See shows. You'll be happy you did.
Jeff F.The Reckoning Quartet (Improv Show) July 2, 2015
I'm really enjoying my improv classes here. The teaching style is different from other big theaters in that it gives emphasis to the relationship between the characters, rather than the comedic "game". I'm learning how to let comedy happen naturally instead of trying to force it. It's definitely made me a better writer as well.
iO also provides a lot of opportunities for early students to perform for an audience, which is a big deal if you want to get good at improv. I was lucky enough to be randomly drawn for "The Lottery", which puts seven students onto a team together to perform four shows on the main stage, flanked by experienced performers from the iO community. It was a great experience.
And of course you're going to see great shows here every night. My favorites are Heyday (Wednesdays), and Tub Step (every other Tuesday).
Yeah, do your improv here.
marc c.Harold Night (Improv Show) July 1, 2015
Buy a ticket for one show, and get into all the shows for the rest of the night! Skip a show and have a cocktail or beer. Great beer selection -- reasonably priced. They had TWO DIPA's on draft when I was there -- including from small craft brewers. They didn't charge the wife for her soda water either, which was very kind. The comedy was pretty good and everyone in the bar area was extremely friendly and jovial. A great place to get a taste of Los Angeles Improv world -- whether your an Angeleno or a tourist.
Holly C.Musical Improv Jam July 1, 2015
This place is amazing! Not only are all the shows amazing improv, but classes here are great as well. I'm not even done taking Level 1 yet and I'm happy to write a review about how wonderful they're going. It's really reasonably priced and classes are 3.5 hours so you definitely get a lot of practice time AND what you pay for. Yes. I took improv as an actor at first but it's going into so many other aspects of my life, like listening and not being afraid to stand up and say what you feel.
I was terrified of improv because I really don't like the unknown and I was just chicken but after taking some classes here I can tell it's changing me in a good way. One of the first things Brian (my teacher) said was that you are valid and what you say is enough but you are enough. How amazing is that?! Nothing gives you confidence, validity and makes you think like improv does. But it's fun and that's the most important thing. I'm super stoked to continue taking classes here- if you're looking to grow as a human being, this is the place!
Now on to the shows! Everyone here is so incredibly talented- any one of the shows you see will be an amazing night. One of my favs is Cook County Social Club- those guys are amazing. And of course Beer, Shark, Mice is always a crowd favorite (and reasonably so!) The other cool thing is that they have people that are taking classes perform in cagematches so you get to see the growth and the illustration of these classes right before your eyes. It's amazing. Plus, it's so much cheaper than any other theater I know of. $5 on a weekday and $10 on a weekend plus only $5 for valet AND cheap drinks. Come on! Quality improv at a reasonable price! You won't be disappointed.
Lauren S.The Reckoning Quartet (Improv Show) June 21, 2015
My friends were in a cagematch at the Monday night Cherry Crush for well over a year and I went to see them once and was hooked. I went pretty much every week after that. In fact, all the shows I've seen at iO were pretty freakin' hilarious. Not to mention there's a bar in the theater so you can mingle with the players afterwards.
I took a few classes at UCB a few years ago and thought I'd give improv another try, so I went to iO since I loved the shows so much. DEAR GOD did it change my entire outlook on the world of improv. Not only am I not afraid to go up anymore, but I feel like I finally understand what improv is all about and how to execute it. I'm having the time of my life at a thing I've always dreaded doing! Especially in my level 3 class now with Paul Vaillancourt. You really get your money's worth with this powerhouse of an improvisor. He knows more about improv than any human being I've ever met and he explains it in an easy to understand way. He even sends out emails with notes after every class.
Very long review short. I love it here. If you're a first time improvisor, I HIGHLY recommend starting here. Great community of people. Love, love, love.
Vina S.Harold Night (Improv Show) May 21, 2015
iO West is an amazing improv theatre school that fosters such a supportive community environment. It doesn't feel like it encourages competitiveness instead they foster team-player behavior. The teachers are great and I like that there lots of opportunities for students (regardless of level) to get up and perform on stage (in and outside of class). Furthermore, iO has a bar, and three stages with shows every night of the week so there is something for everyone. Oh and there is a $5 valet with validation across the street.
Kyle M.Harold Night (Improv Show) May 12, 2015
iO West Theater is a really fun place to see great improv and sketch comedy without paying a fortune. Improv is always difficult because you can have the best improv group in the world and they'll still have off nights so there's no guarantee that the show will have you falling out of your seat laughing every time. However, I've been to iO West a handful of times now and every time, I end up staying longer than I had planned to. The comedy here is really top-notch and the theater is small so it feels very personal: there's no bad seat in the house! At only $5-10 per show (with no drink minimum), no other improv in the area can compare.
They also offer improv classes, if you're interested in getting on stage yourself! For me, I'll stick to Yelping. (You can thank me later...)
Darcy K.Top Story Weekly News-Driven Improv May 10, 2015
Whether you're here to watch other people do great improv or to learn how to do it yourself, iO is the best of the best.
There are awesome shows every night, but my three recommendations to acquaint you with iO are Opening Night on Fridays (an improvised B'way-style musical), Dasariski on Thursday (they're legendary, gotta see 'em), and Hill/Jones on Tuesdays (a two-man improv show with dozens of creative characters).
The best way to experience iO, though, is as a student. The training center instructors are dazzingly talented, guiding students along in a safe atmosphere so that even your mistakes become fun and helpful. Annnd the teachers all perform here constantly so you can see that they know what they're talking about. IO took my conception of improv from "too scary to even think about" to "probably my favorite thing to do." Plus, the community here is so welcoming and there are opportunities everywhere to get involved. By the time you get to level 7, iO will be your home away from home. And as a student you can see shows for free! There is no downside here. Go to iO.
Suzanna T.Harold Night (Improv Show) April 13, 2015
iO West is the best thing I could've gotten involved with in Los Angeles. The teachers are amazing and the shows are incredible. There are also tons of opportunities for students to perform. If you want to be a better improviser, come to iO. If you've never improvised before, come to iO. If you're signing up for classes and unsure of who to take and have a chance to take Holly Laurent for anything, do it. Not only will she make you a better improviser, but also a better person.
Show recommendations- Definitely Hill/Jones, The Reckoning, and Cook County Social Club. You will laugh your ass off. That is a promise.
Susanna L.Harold Night (Improv Show) March 6, 2015
I've studied at several theaters in Los Angeles and what I have found at iO West is a fantastic and supportive community. In addition to an excellent teaching staff who ground you in relationships, emotion and character choices, there are tons of opportunities for students to perform in the DCT and Loft theaters. In addition, every night there are great shows on the Main Stage.
My personal recommendations:
Take Brian O'Connell. At least once in your life if you care about being better at improvising. Same goes for James Grace.
See Dasariski. See King Ten. See HeyDey. See Dr. God. See Beer Shark Mice. See Mo and Tell. See Weirdass.
Go to the festivals. Enter the festivals! Go to cage matches. Enter cage matches!
Five stars cause I mean it.

I love IO WEST!!! I've been seeing shows for the past year and I'm hooked. I don't have a favorite show because there are so many great ones. Harold night, Cherry Crush, Dasariski, and last but not least, my favorite, Beer Shark Mice. I believe it is the only improv theatre with a bar, to add some icing to that cake. I finally decided to sign up for classes and I'm taking Level 1 with Tim Mayse. I look forward to learning and listening.
Jeff G.King Ten Original Improv March 3, 2015
I really enjoy taking classes here at iO. I'm currently in Level 6 and all of the teachers are top notch. I've learned so much from them and really feel like I've improved since I've been here. There are many opportunities to perform as a student and there is a great community of awesome, supportive people.
There are some really funny shows here and as a student, you get to see them all for free. Some great weekly shows to check out are Hill/Jones on Tuesday, Wheelhouse, HeyDay and King Ten on Wednesdays, Dasariski, The Reckoning and Cook County Social Club on Thursdays and Opening night on Fridays. I know there are other awesome shows going on here every night of the week, but those are my favorites.
If you're thinking about taking improv classes or just feel like going out and having a good laugh, you should definitely consider doing it at iO.
Erin D.Opening Night! The Improvised Musical March 2, 2015
This theater is really awesome. There are 3 stages, a bar, drink service during shows, cheap valet parking, and a whole lot of talent to make you laugh. I have been to several Friday night shows and have never been disappointed. If you buy one ticket, it gets you into all the shows for the whole night (barring any special events or festivals going on).
Every Friday at 9pm Opening Night, a musical improv team, performs and they are absolutely incredible. A must see. This theater also teaches classes and writing workshops. I have also seen some great sketch teams and even a very risque burlesque show! You never know what you'll find any given night at iO.
The staff is really friendly and the theater is the perfect combination of intimate and spacious. GO!!
Kim J.Top Story Weekly News-Driven Improv March 1, 2015
I'm on Level 2 in Improv and loving it! My teacher, Colleen Doyle, is originally from Chicago and funny as heck. She creates this awesomely creative, non threatening, crazy balls atmosphere in the classroom which causes you to let go and do your best work. I've also had class with Brian O'Connell and Eric Hunnicutt. Each were so great and super helpful in ushering this totally non-comedic Betty into a somewhat decent improviser.
Also the atmosphere is unlike other improv comedy theaters in Los Angeles in that there's such a cool sense of community. Walking in is like walking into the middle of a really fun party and everyone pats you on the back and somebody hands you a drink. Super welcoming and non cliquey.
Oh, and I think my most fave part about taking classes is that students get in free to most of the shows. That totally helps me to visit shows while taking class and build on what I just learned. Oh, and there are plenty of opportunities for students to take the stage and practice. Def recommend.

I recently moved to LA so when my roommate suggested I take Improv classes at IO WEST, I was a little hesitant. I gotta say I am really impressed with how quickly my hesitation dissipated once I started taking classes. The teachers are amazing, and so incredibly versatile in how they choose to share the gift of IMPROV with the rest of world. I genuinely enjoy taking classes and seeing shows at IO WEST, primarily because everyone is there to learn and have a good time. I am grateful, that this was one of the first places I was exposed to as a LA newbie.

IO West is an amazing Theatre! Whether you want to learn the amazing craft of improv by watching others or signing up for classes this is the place to be! As a student there, I have learned the art of long form improvisation in a fun, kind, challenging, and family-like environment. I spoke to several Alumni before joining, who had also taken classes at the other improv schools here in LA, and they told me they received the most attention and best training at IO. The thing I believe sets it apart is the sense of community there. IO is chalk full of networking opportunities. By level 2, I had met a few classmates, started a sketch team, submitted to IO's Funny Women's Festival, and won a four week run on the mainstage and showcase at the Comedy Central stages! I don't believe I would have received the same opportunities at Groundlings or UCB as performing on their mainstage is very difficult to be considered to do. IO believes in giving their students the chance to proove themselves. If you sign up for classes, go to shows in the fully stocked bar, and speak to the community, i guarantee you too will be presented with opportunities that will further your career in multiple aspects. Come and check it out and see celebrity guests from your favorite shows perform and have a drink with them in the bar afterward! I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

I am starting to really dig this place... I've been here a few times recently to see friend's shows. The programming provides some much needed mirth and is low cost and accessible. The bar is really fantastic, I would stop by just for the bar. It has a low key, dive feel that is hard to find in LA. Drinks are inexpensive and they always have fun specials. The crowd is mostly improv actors who are much more tolerable than regular actors. The rest of the crowd is friends of actors and a few misguided Hollywood types that got lost on the way to the club next door. The only thing that bugs me is how loud the club next door is. Some nights you can hear their beats in the middle of your improv show.

This is a great theater for improv and sketch comedy. We just saw Top Story Weekly last night and love the improv musical show that runs every Friday night. parking can be tricky here so be sure to read all the signs for street parking. if you can't find any, there's a lot with a flat rate on Vine if you enter after 6pm, it's not too bad. Also - this place is 21 and over only. They have a full bar and a cocktail waitress who will bring you drinks during the performance :)

The thing that constantly impresses me about iO West is the community it fosters. There is no sense of social hierarchy and everyone is welcomed with open arms. They are constantly striving to provide more performance opportunities for students and honestly ask what they can do to make your experience the best it can be. The teachers are amazing, the classes are super fun, and the shows are great. It's also nice to be able to hang out in the bar with the performers and your friends before/after the shows.

As someone who had a huge fear and aversion to improv, I am now graduating Level 7! I loved my teachers, they made class fearless. I loved how not heady everything was (unlike another school I went to). I recommend this school to all my friends and cohorts who are thinking about dipping their toe in. Just do it!

I just graduated from the top echelon of improv courses at iO, Level 7. What a challenging and enriching experience it was! It took approximately a year and a half. I was a complete novice to performing art, never having even been in a school play. As a businessman, improv classes took me WAY out of my comfort zone.
Courses last 3 1/2 hours and are held for 7 weeks. Instructors are performing improv artists themselves and can be seen in one of the many nightly shows at the theater. Most of my classmates were half my age and are aspiring actors trying to break into showbiz. I've seen many of them on TV shows and commercials.
But despite the differences in age and background, there is a tremendous supportive bonding experience to improv. The notion of "yes, and" is woven throughout all of the activity and the teacher and other students are there to help you be funnier and look better on stage.
You are encouraged to attend shows which are free to students. By Level 5, you are required to perform in class shows in order to graduate. Level 7 focuses on creating your own unique improv form as a class.
There is a fantastic community feel to the bar at iO and I recognize many of my former classmates.
I'm going to cherish the memories of iO as my wife and I move cross country to Sarasota, FL. Who knows what's next for me. I hear there's a fantastic clown college there...

Lots a good shows, and the Sketch Comedy shows on Sundays are some of the best I've ever seen!
Cheap drinks and funny stuff? I'll be returning.
Suwon W.The Armando Show September 23, 2012
Saw the Armando show last night at IO West. The performers really amaze me because they are so on point, in the moment, coming up with bits that seem like they must be rehearsed. Very funny show! The bar itself has a cute/divey feel, of course it is on Hollywood near Vine, so I came early and enjoyed a drink, people watching. Some very funny peeps come from IO West, Tina Fey, Chris Farley, Amy Poehler, among others. The show is an 1.5hrs so it does seem a bit long by the end. None the less, it's great! Highly recommend.
