LA River Kayaking (Glendale Narrows Recreation Zone, near Downtown LA)

What to expect
  • Paddle in your single kayak for approximately 2 1/4 hours over roughly 3 miles flatwater. All basic equipment provided. Experienced and certified river guides teach paddling & river safety skills. Beginner through advanced skills welcome.
  • Our Educators provide environmental education along the way, teaching all about the LA River: Watershed, wildlife, history and the politics of your hometown river.
  • This summer is your chance to paddle the river and participate in a one-of-a-kind experience. This river section is the most natural area with soft-bottom and tree-lined banks offering a serene experience with fish, flora and fauna. This is truly an eye-opening unforgettable event that should be on the bucket list of any Angeleno.
Join us in paddling the Los Angeles River and participate in this one-of-a-kind Los Angeles experience!

These guided kayak tours in the Glendale Narrows section run through a sporty 2 ½-mile stretch within an official river Recreation Zone. These trips pass through the Frogtown neighborhood, which is just over the hill, east of Dodger Stadium and close to Atwater Village, Echo Park, Silverlake and Mt. Washington. Unlike our trips in the Sepulveda Basin, these trips include moderate Class-I rapids mixed with some flatwater stretches, adventurous and fun, but not dangerous. You will observe numerous bird species and usually see fisherman and other city denizens doing their thing along the river. You'll pick up safety and paddling skills, all while having fun and getting some great exercise along the way. While in Frogtown, stop in for lunch or breakfast at Spoke Bicycle Cafe before or after your trip. Be part of this culturally and recreationally vibrant portion of the LA River.

LA River Expeditions is the original boating outfit on the river and the only one leading tours in both Recreational Zones. We are the group that, in 2008, paddled the 51-miles of the river to help win environmental protections for the river under the Clean Water Act.  We're proud of our contributions to our city's education, recreation and activism. We do all this because we are avid kayakers and all-around river enthusiasts. We love rivers and we love sharing the river experience with others. Our guides have decades of collective experience running rivers worldwide. They are professionally trained and certified in both river safety and first aid/CPR. You'll be in good hands!

Note: These trips are challenging and not for everyone. This is not simply flatwater paddling, as on our Sepulveda Basin tours in the San Fernando Valley. There are numerous obstacles amidst shallow water. You will need to lift your boat and paddle some light rapids that could flip your boat. There is often 90+ degree heat, so protecting yourself with sunscreen and a hat is recommended. Please DO NOT register for these trips if you are a first-time kayaker. Your kayaking skills should be Intermediate or Advanced. Do not register if you have a medical condition that could be compromised by this activity, or if you are sensitive to less than pristine water. If you weigh more than 210 lbs., please contact us before purchasing tickets, as the boats have prescribed capacity limits.
