LA River Kayaking (Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve, near Encino)

What to expect
  • Paddle in your single kayak for approximately 2 ¼ hours over roughly 3 miles flatwater. All basic equipment provided. Experienced and certified river guides teach paddling & river safety skills. Beginner through advanced skills welcome.
  • Our Educators provide environmental education along the way, teaching all about the LA River: Watershed, wildlife, history and the politics of your hometown river.
  • This summer is your chance to paddle the river and participate in a one-of-a-kind experience. This river section is the most natural area with soft-bottom and tree-lined banks offering a serene experience with fish, flora and fauna. This is truly an eye-opening unforgettable event that should be on the bucket list of any Angelo.
Join us in paddling the Los Angeles River and participate in this one-of-a-kind Los Angeles experience!

These guided kayak tours are in the Sepulveda Basin which is the most natural, wonderfully green part of the river which passes through one of two official Recreational Zones. It is a leisurely, 3-mile flatwater paddle which is manageable for beginners and fun for other skill levels, too. You will observe numerous bird species as you paddle along, and spot locals as they fish from the banks. You'll pick up safety and paddling skills, all while having fun and getting some great exercise along the way. We run this trip as a loop to avoid any hassles of portaging around hazards or barriers, or waiting to be transported back to your vehicle. All in all, after this trip you won't be able to look at Los Angeles in quite the same way again.

LA River Expeditions is the original boating outfit on the river and the only one leading tours in both Recreational Zones. We are the group that, in 2008, paddled the 51-miles of the river to help win environmental protections for the river under the Clean Water Act. Were proud of our contributions to our city's education, recreation and activism. We do all this because we are avid kayakers and all-around river enthusiasts. We love rivers and we love sharing the river experience with others. Our guides have decades of collective experience running rivers worldwide. They are professionally trained and certified in both river safety and first aid/CPR. You'll be in good hands!

Note: These trips are leisurely and relaxed.  This is essentially flatwater paddling with a few slight current. There is, however, often 90+ degree heat, so protecting yourself with sunscreen and a hat is recommended. You will need to lift your boat with assistance from others, but it's not too taxing. It's unlikely but possible that you could tip your boat over, so please dress as if you might get wet.  (More likely, you'll want to wade through knee-deep water). These trips are OK for all skills levels. Please do not sign up for this trip, though, if you have a medical condition that could be compromised by this activity, or if you are sensitive to less than pristine water. If you weigh more than 210 lbs, please contact us before purchasing tickets as the boats have prescribed capacity limits.
