About the Teacher
Sonia M.Beginners Boxing June 3, 2017
I have been studying Krav Maga at REKM more than one year. I started with zero knowledge in martial arts, and very low level of fitness. For long time I wanted to study Krav Maga, and when I decided to try it, I started checking the reviews and information about several places and finally chose REKM. The fact that the teacher "Sensei" was a fighter and has been teaching Military and Police, and teaches seminars in many places in the world; was a decision maker for me. At REKM they offer Krav Maga, boxing and Israeli Ju-Jitsu classes for all levels, with knowledgeably charming instructors: Sensei Roy, Coach Mike, Gio, Pouya, and friendly front desk staff.
Once in a while there are seminars that teach you more materials with some hands on experience.
I enrolled for 10 sessions to try the place and see if that is what I wanted.
On the first class, I realized how out of shape I was and was getting discouraged; luckily, Sensei, staff and other students cheered me up and encouraged me to try my best. Well, I have and I'm still here. For me, this is the best and most fun form of workout, not only I get in shape, I also learn how to defend myself in case I will ever need it.
Well, it's about 5 months since I reached level 2. There are students from different backgrounds and different age groups, each has his/her own reason to be here. Sometimes classes are tougher than other times, but when you are surrounded by good company it makes it fun and enjoyable. Studying at REKM is very rewarding and feels like being surrounded by family; everyone is friendly, positive and strong minded and willing to help others. When you make mistakes they correct you and when you do a good job they cheer you.
Sensei Roy is very charming and makes it his priority to make you achieve your goals. He asks what your goals for this class are, and pays attention to details and teaches you how to correct your mistakes. He might seem aggressive to some people, but, I see this as his passion to teach; like the teacher who pushes you hard because he knows you can do it, and gets frustrated when you don't try your best.
He expect to see you are dedicated to learn and be at your best.
I noticed so many times he told some students NOT to hit so hard and be careful. He always emphasizes on your safety first and using the right technics. Part of getting stronger is to condition your body in order to not injure yourself, even if it's accompanied with some bruises to your body or ego.
Sensei Roy's motto is: "You choose if you are a fighter/survivor or loser in life".
I decide to be a fighter/survivor even-though it's seems to be harder.
Wanting to be able to walk in the streets without worrying what if...... and being able to protect my kids if I have to..... , helps me want to improve and try even harder. You have to tell yourself: I will, because I can.
This class is making me more confident, stronger physically and emotionally and determined in my actions. I learned not to bother myself with B.S. in life, but to concentrate on what is important. I feel healthier and stronger than before and hope to improve by the day. (I know there is a loooooooooong way to go.....:-))
If you want to improve your mind and body, try your limits; and willing to leave your ego at home, try REKM.

Was taking Krav Maga in the Chicago area before moving to LA. Found this place when taking my dog to the vet (across the street) and got the urge to start up again. So glad I did. Great training, great work out (have lost 15 pounds since starting in March). Roy is very knowledgeable and is very good at teaching. I have heard people complain that he spends too much time on one technique but in my opinion I feel this is a good thing. Its better to learn one or two moves a week and know them well then learn 5 or 6 and be just okay at them. Roy also understands that some people have limitations and he takes that into account while training (I have an old hockey injury that flairs up from time to time). Weather you just want to get in shape or learn how t defend yourself, Krav Maga LA is the place to get it done. They also have boxing classes available.

Roy Elghanayan's KM is the best way to train in Krav Maga just short of becoming an Israeli citizen and joining the IDF. This is real tough training for people who want to defend themselves in real tough situations. Sensei Roy and his instructors are talented in understanding a students capabilities. No one is too weak or too strong for his Krav Maga. His classes are well suited for all individuals from children and beginners to high end law enforcement/military/special operators. You get out what you put in and can train within your level of ability to get stronger. You will be tested here. Growth is encouraged.
If you enter the doors at REKM, you will see an 'always clean' very modern training facility. You will be greeted by an overwhelmingly close community of students, staff, and professional instructors and you will have a difficult time not wanting to stay. My only regret is not starting sooner. Yours will be the same.
Take the first step towards something that may save your life one day.

Sensei Roy is very passionate about his training. I was going to check out a bunch of places to train but as soon as I walked in to his place I knew this was the spot there were great energies and he plays pumping music. I'm def staying here till my first black belt!!

Before I committed myself to coming here twice a week, I made a lot of researches and found out Sensei Roy is the most outstanding master here in LA. When I did come here in person, I was only surprised more by Sensei Roy's techniques, passion and philosophy. He does his best to teach all the students hand by hand. At the same time, he always encourages us to share all questions with peers so we can all think and improve.
Most times Sensei is very humorous and charming, and sometimes he is very strict with us. Someone might think it is too tough or very personal. HOWEVER I really appreciate this. I think he is pushing us to our limits and sometimes only through this way could we pay enough attention and overcome some bottlenecks. Overall what you take all depend on your perception and attitude.
Giovanni is another instructor for my jiu-jitsu. Even I only had two classes with him, I like his attention to details and very nice personality.
In addition, Aaron and Paola in reception desk are both very cool and helpful. They do their best to accommodate whatever we need and whenever we need it.
At last, I can't speak highly of my fellow friends. They are the ones working side by side with you. They give you the most sincere suggestions and encourage you all the time. I feel like I bump into a big family.
In answering one of my questions: "what's your secret of outperforming 99% practitioners?" Sensei goes:"You need to have a very solid basic foundation. And don't practice like a robot, think with your heart how to do better every time" I am very impressed by the answer and here I share with you my peer friends. Excellence doesn't come by itself, let us earn it!

This review is long over due. When I first started looking for training, I wanted to look for the best. If you want to be the best you always have to surround yourself with the best. I found sensei Roy. I had read "the Brotherhood of Warriors" by Aaron Cohen, to prep myself. I would highly suggest reading that to understand the culture and the methods of why they are so tough. I found out later that Aaron Cohen the author teaches there. Small world.
This type of training is not cuddle your inner child. He is teaching you how to survive. So be prepared not to cry on sensei' shoulder when you get kicked in the head.
It makes you stronger for life and God forbid if anything happens to you on the street you will be able to get out alive.
My personal outlook has changed. I think it is super important for everyone to take a self defense class especially women. Walking down a dark street at night you don't cower and that gives off fighter not victim energy.
I appreciate the care, the intense training, and the dedication that not just Sensei Roy has given me but his whole team.
I cannot thank him or be appreciative of such an important skill that I have come to know.

Hands down this is the best Krav Maga dojo in LA! If you want to be pushed, if you want to be able to protect yourself and your loved ones, and if you want a great workout this is the place for you!!

As I prepare for my upcoming test at Krav Maga LA (a.k.a. REKM), I reflect on my learning experiences and my main reasons for training here:
* Productive atmosphere: I want to make the most of my training sessions after a long day. Students are expected to remain focused and train hard, as exemplified by the work ethics of Sensei Roy, the staff, and the advanced level students. This school is not for those looking for attention, a little coddling, or an ego boost.
* Belts are earned, not bought: Testing up is based on skill and the ability to successfully demonstrate the required techniques.
* Effective learning progression: Krav Maga LA's approach is more practical and self defense based. I'm interested in learning how to protect myself rather than fight in a ring. Padwork begins at the basic level; light contact and full-contact body conditioning and sparring is incorporated into the intermediate and advanced levels. Clean technique and precision are stressed at all levels.
Krav Maga LA can be rewarding and fun if you are in it for the right reasons - for self defense. I look forward to every class and practice session!

Trained at Sensei Roy's Krav Maga studio and learned some self defense, core workout techniques, and knock outs. I am scared of punching people but Sensei coached the fear out of me.
Rocky, Sensei's terrier kept us company on the mats. The studio is clean, well-lit, well-ventilated, and Paula and Aaron man the front desk in a welcoming manner, answering all my questions without trying to sell anything. Parking on the side street is available for 2 hours for free!!!
Definitely visit the place that you would want to try out a few Krav Maga classes for a couple of weeks and I'm sure you'll get hooked just like I did. Lots of women and men training and fighting together. Awesome!!!!

Came in to learn some self defense in case I need to knock someone out. So I researched some Krav Maga classes, and they came up as the best spot in LA. Sensei Roy really kicked my butt! Very professional and knowledgeable.
The studio is in a great location with tons of metered parking in front and free parking on the side streets. I definitely didn't expect a fighting studio to be so clean. There were protein bars for sale in front too. Overall I loved it and will definitely be back a again. My girl and I are gonna do the $99 beginner special this month. Great prices!!
Also, they have boxing classes with Coach Mike. The classes focuses on pro boxing and conditioning. If you want to be trained by experts, REKM (Krav Maga LA) is the best place you'll find in Los Angeles hands down. ;)

I enjoy trying new things, getting out of my comfort and stepping into the REKM dojo has been a rewarding experience for me. This place is full of positive and strong minded individuals who are always pushing themselves and helping others along the way. Self defense is essential because you never know when you will have to protect yourself or protect your family. Sensei Roy inspires all his students to become physically as well as mentally strong and I have seen this change in me. I am always happy that I made the choice to try krav Maga and thankful that I found a Sensei who cares about his students and their well being. OSS
P.S. the workers at the front desk are always helpful and friendly, they definitely give this place a warm feeling.

I'm originally from Japan and always loved Martial art. But when I met Krav Maga, it's just amazing . Not only train your mind and muscle, but also learning to defense when you are in a dangerous situation. Everywhere in the world , when you are in a wrong spot and wrong timing, there is no way to avoid the dangerous situation. I'm learning so much from Krav Maga, how to defense myself.
I def recommend Roy sensei!

I drive an hour to get here! Why? Because learning Krav Maga from sensei Roy is like learning karate from Bruce lee!
If you're interested in Krav Maga this is the real deal! I love how he encourages everyone in the studio and takes a keen interest in why you're there and what you want out of it. I like that it's just the right amount of challenging and not too dangerous. As a women with no prior experience in martial arts this is everything I could have asked for! I love this place and would strongly encourage anyone to check this place out
