I searched tediously online to find an affordable culinary school with high-ratings. It took some effort to find the right culinary school with the right offerings that I want to invest in. All the cooking classes in LA offered a short session and DID NOT include a take-home recipe. I did my research, and I found Saute Culinary Academy located in Monrovia.
Be prepared to learn many cuisines and learn about different cultures! Meeting the chef and seeing his kitchen was an unforgettable experience. I can't express how impressed I am with this cooking class. THIS IS A SOLD OUT EVENT so I encourage to register early. The classes being offered were small that fits about 12 people. You get a personal time with everyone. Oh, did I mention that you get to bring your own wine in case you're looking to have a glass of wine? And the class is very well-organized and kid-friendly. More importantly, you get to be surrounded by food enthusiasts!
Not only I was impressed with the class, Chef Alex has an extraordinary background. He has served a few established restaurants in Pasadena. Oh yeah, he is also an instructor that loves to teach. Thumbs up to this professional chef who opened a culinary school to the public!!!

The team loved the cooking class experience and chef Alex was awesome. This was our fist time doing a cooking class as our team bonding event and chef Alex was our host and instructing chef. He started with a intro of himself and went through the menu and how the kitchen works in detail. Once we picked out our menu he took us to the kitchen and showed us where everything were and set us off to cook. Through out the cooking process he was walking around making sure all questions were answered and showed everyone the techniques required to complete our dish. After all the cooking was done the entire team sat down to have a very nice buffet style dinner. The food came out great and the team loved it. The portions were very generous and almost everyone had seconds and there were still food left over to take home. We loved it and will come back to cook again! Thank you chef Alex!!

This place is great. I gave my husband a date night for Valentine's day. Romantic French cooking date night was the theme. Every couple got to cook one or two dishes depending on how complicated the recipes were. We all tasted each other's dishes at the end and left so full. There was a lot of food. We had a fantastic time and ended up making friends. Bring your own wine for a full experience. My husband keeps talking about coming back and bringing friends.

Had our daughter's birthday party here yesterday and Chef Alex and his staff were amazing!! They made our daughter's birthday party such a fun and wonderful experience! Everyone, kids and parents were very impressed and had a great time!! Everything was a success!! We will most definitely be back!!

I loved this class. I am not an experienced cook at all and was treated very well. I noted others with lots of experience enjoying the class and being challenged. Would recommend it to everyone and think it is well worth the money. Chef Alex is a wonderful!

I took a Valentine's Day culinary class with my husband and it was amazing. My husband and I always have the tradition of cooking together on Valentine's Day. This year we thought, hey let's to do it with the professionals so we can learn something. Guess what? It was worth every penny. We cooked an extensive mediterranean dinner along with 7 other couples. Each person/couple cooked a dish which we all ended up sharing at the end. First, the ingredients we used were all fresh and ready for us at a table. We had full access to the kitchen including all the equipment and fancy tools. Best of all, we had the chef's expertise available to us when we needed it. You could tell that some people were more comfortable in the kitchen than others but somehow the chef and his assistant were able to guide everyone through the process. All in all, I have nothing but great things to say about Saute Academy. My only complaint was that V-day fell on Tuesday this year which meant I had to leave earlier than I wanted to. :)

Absolutely fantastic! Just went with a group of 18 of our friends and we cooked a Mediterranean feast! Chef Alex was very great and did a fantastic job of being available with instruction and tips, but also letting those who wanted to be 'on their own' do their own thing. Tons of food, we were all amazed by what we created! Amazing recipes that even the most novice chef could make something delicious. We will definitely be back!

What a great experience! Our department came here for a team building activity and I'm really glad we did. Chef Alex was awesome, the food was delicious, everything cooked from scratch with quality ingredients and a great vibe. I highly recommend this place to anyone. I was super stressed about my soup cooking skills and Chef Alex really helped me feel comfortable, taught me some great useful skills and helped me conquer my fear of cooking soup annnnd the soup turned out sooo yummy! Chef Alex accommodated my 30th birthday private event. I did a private event so I brought 12 other friends with me. I chose Spanish tapas and everyone really enjoyed it. Everything went smoothly from booking the event to arriving to the kitchen. Chef Alex made everyone feel comfortable in the kitchen. He provided us with all the ingredients, aprons, recipes, water, lemonade, and accommodated any other special needs. We were even able to bring alcohol. Overall...no regrets and we may come back next year to cook up another cuisine! Thanks chef Alex!

Took a friend here for her birthday and booked the vegetarian class on a Tuesday night. The experience was amazing and the food turned out soooo good! We all loved it and were all very surprised that everything we made was vegetarian! Chef Alex is super knowledgeable and personable which made the overall experience that much better. He was there whenever you needed help but also gave us freedom to do our thing. We all can't wait to go back to take another class. We had a small class of 5, and there was plenty of leftover food to take home :)
I would totally recommend this class to any of my family or friends!
ALSO... bring tupperware for the leftovers!! We were all sad we didn't bring enough

I would give Chef Alex 6 stars if I could! Celebrated my 40th birthday with 22 of my closest friends at Saute. We booked the date 2 months in advance and dropped in many times to check out the place and figure out decorations. Chef Alex accommodated us with a smile every time.
We chose to cook French Cuisine and he worked the room of 22 novices with great ease. This guy knows his stuff and is very good at what he does! He was there to help everyone, but never interfered or micromanaged us. Even when we went over our time, which meant that he and his crew had to stay late for clean-up, etc., he didn't stop the party. My guests and I had the most amazing time, eating delicious food, in a great space. Yes! Yes! Yes! You should definitely have your next event here!!!
My only regret is that I forgot to thank Chef Alex during my toast. He made my celebration a memorable one that we are sure to talk about for years to come!

Our girl scout troop had a cooking class there. My 6 year old made pasta from scratch. She had the best time ever. They managed to give all the girls an amazing experience and teach them some awesome cooking skills. Can't wait for her to take the Saturday kids classes. I want to the classes too, such a great place. Thanks Chef Alex for caring about the kids!

he Mediterranean cuisine cooking class is outstanding! My husband said it was the best food he's ever tasted; and he can't wait for me to go to another class! Chef Alex is not only a talented chef, he's a patient teacher to those of us less gifted in the kitchen. I have been to Saute Culinary Academy two times now- once with friends and once as a "team building" activity with my coworkers that my boss arranged. It is such a FUN place!! It doesn't matter if you're an experienced chef or have never cooked in your life-- you're going to have a great time and get to eat some awesome grub! Chef Alex is a blast to cook with and learn from. He is full of knowledge and you can tell this is his passion. He is very patient and helpful and explains things well. His personality and friendliness really makes the class such an enjoyable experience. If you're thinking about taking a class--STOP AND JUST REGISTER NOW! You won't regret it! I found Saute online when I was planning a birthday party for my mom back in July 2015. I reserved spaces for 6 people in a small evening Italian cooking class. Chef Alex was super professional and accommodating through the planning process. When we arrived at the school for our hands on Italian cooking class both Chef Alex and Chef Scott were friendly and warm and so fun! It's a great date night idea, bring your own wine to share at the end of the class. The kitchen was perfect for the group, the class was great and we got to have a fun and casual communal dinner after each of us perfected a dish (or two). I'm excited to check out the new location! This will definitely be a night my mom, her friends and I won't forget! :)

Five stars for one of the bests nights ever! My bosses hosted our holiday party here last night and we had the BEST time. We chose to make French cuisine and I learned so many different techniques and recipes all thanks to Chef Alex. He's definitely a great guy! He was very professional, very knowledgeable, and incredibly patient! And we are seriously a big group of pretty outspoken stylists so it would be very easy to become agitated with so many big personalities in one room. There was not one moment where Chef Alex wasn't assisting someone who needed it. I will preach on about my experience here at Sauté and absolutely return with either my boyfriend, coworkers, or family members! Thank you to my bosses and thank you very much Chef Alex for being such an amazing person and making our experience a great one! I'll be seeing you soon!
Oh and I forgot to mention, aside from the fabulous time we had all the food everyone made was incredibly delicious :) Chef really knows what he's doing here! Thanks again!

Thank you Chef Alex for having me as a guest to your class. I enjoyed the night of cooking Italian food as a team and making ravioli from scratch.
I arrived at Saute Culinary with seven other people and Alex (our chef) gave us a breakdown of what we need to know before cooking.
He gave us instructions on where the ingredients were (on the table) or in the refrigerator. Where to get the utensils and cooking ware. He gave us safety instructions and be polite with your neighbors.
He gave us about 10-12 recipes to choose from. We either had one recipe or we paired up for the ravioli since that one took the longest.
The dishes we made were
Zuppo Tuscano Soup
Bruschetta on bread and garlic
Salad with cranberries and nuts
Fresh ravioli stuffed with sautéed mushrooms and ricotta cheese in pesto sauce
Fresh ravioli with Buttternut squash filling
Meatballs in tomato sauce
I'm really glad I tried making the pasta/ravioli from scratch. It was definitely a lot of fun and would love to try it at home after my experience. I would recommend the Italian class since I enjoy fresh Italian food. Chef Alex was really easy to cook with and he gave us really good feedback. One thing I learned was you didn't have to wash mushroom instead dry them and chop them up.
Thanks for the experience and I'm glad I was finally able to attend your class. I would like to try your Mediterranean next!

I completely forgot to write a review for Saute after attending the Mediterranean cooking class. The gf and I have attended a few different cooking classes and I would definitely say this was the most fun. I say that because it was very social with everyone communicating with each other throughout the whole process and Alex was also very interactive with everyone. He would routinely check in with each station to make sure they were doing okay and willing to help with any questions/instruction. We brought our own wine and beer but he had wine and a few beers for other folks who didn't come as prepared as we did haha. One of the other couples in the class mentioned that they had taken different classes with him and they plan on doing them all. I don't blame them and we will definitely sign up for a different class soon.
How it works is you go in and all sit around a table. Alex then goes over the menu for the evening while explaining the process and preparation of each course. People will have the chance to pick which they prefer to make and after everyone gets assigned a dish, you go to the kitchen to a station and start per the instructions/directions given to you.
The dinner was a ton of different courses so I don't know if I remember them all but here is what I do remember:
- Chicken zatar (I made this one): was very good and super easy to follow the recipe
- Lentil soup (gf made): was also very good but took a lot of attention while simmering
- Kafta: very tasty and full of flavor
- Spanikopita: phyllo dough stuffed with fetaand spinach. These were a huge hit!
- Falafel: the least tasty dish of the night but I think it had to do more with who cooked it lol
- Hand made pitawith tzatziki (all from scratch): oh so good
After everyone was done, you sit around the large table and eat family style. Everyone had a great time and we even left with a small plate of leftovers ha! Can't wait to take another one of Alex's classes

This was such a fun experience! We were 9 ladies celebrating a birthday. We cooked, laughed and ate together. Wasn't sure what to expect but it was a pleasant surprise.
Chef Alex is a professional and at the same time very easy going and helpful. He is more than willing to explain how to do what you need to do and he will demonstrate. Learned a whole lot and all while having fun!I made the Cous Cous salad for our hearty Mediterranean incredibly delicious meal.
He mentioned he is moving to a much larger location so we will have to go back to do this agin and check out his new facility.
I drove from Anaheim to Arcadia in traffic and then home to Corona at 11p and would do it all over again!
Great fun especially with people you know!

We have taken 2 private group classes - Mediterranean Cuisine and Spanish Tapas.
Both were outstanding. Chef Alex is a storyteller - engaging, entertaining and very knowledgeable. He makes cooking fun and interesting. Food was immensely delicious. We made dish after dish (I could not believe how many different dishes we made and the variety of tastes and spices). We'll definitely be back - already looking at the dates for our next class. Perfect bounding experience for co-workers outside our work environment!

Awesome environment in a professional grade kitchen. Chef Alex is fun, easy going and very knowledgeable. His classes usually have a type of cuisine. The classes consist of about 12 people, but I understand the new location will allow for bigger classes.
Each participant picks a recipe from the night's menu and is in charge of making enough for the whole class. Chef Alex helps everyone with their dish and answers all questions. At the end of the night, you have an amazing dinner party. So fun! Go with a friend, a date, or even by yourself and make friends. What a great time! I definitely will go back soon.

Had a great time with Chef Alex. His enthusiasm was contagious. Very knowledgeable. When people ask me if I cook my answer is generally "I can feed myself." With his guidance my friend and I cooked a delicious tilapia in veggies and potatoes and a white wine - butter sauce. We went for the French class, it was phenomenal. Our only regret is not taking Tupperware for the left overs! Also, make sure you take some wine or if you're like me, some whiskey to sip while you cook and eat. We will be back for the Italian class : )

Alex and Lisa are awesome!
When you get there you can do street parking if its past 6 pm or park in the lot by the back. Bring tupperware because there will always be extra food that you'll want to take home and don't wear high heels.
I came here with my girlfriend and we both LOVED it. We first sit at the tables with about 10 other people sipping on wine they provided for us. He talks about the recipes and you get to choose which one you want to make. Then, its about 2 hours of cooking and learning. It gets a little hectic but the time pasts quickly. Everyone eats the dishes and everything tastes delicious not only because you made it but also because you had fun doing it!
You're treated like family here, it is fun, unique, and recommended for everyone at least once!

This is the first time I've ever experienced cooking in a professional kitchen. It definitely gave me a different prospective and appreciation for what it really takes to prepare food for the masses. I learned some new recipes, cutting techniques and tricks of the trade.
Chef Alex really has a flair for his craft. He really shows how much he loves what he does for a living.
Thank you for the experience. And I highly recommend this culinary academy. I'm determined to sign up again.

Came here for the first time last night and WOW, I am hooked. Chef Alex is so welcoming, and easy to talk to. One evening with him, and I could tell he had the appropriate experience to do what he is doing.
How it works: Each person is responsible for certain dish(es), and you get together at the end of the night and have the meal, family style! Don't show up at the start of the class starving, because, you know, you have to cook a meal before you can eat it. And it IS a cooking class. The harder a time you and/or your group has in the kitchen, the later you'll eat! Simple as that.
I was there as part of a group of 6 taking the class. If it's a full class, there'll be 12 people. I can definitely see how it can get crowded in that kitchen with so many cooks, but mind your manners, and all will be fine! If you can get a group of at least 8 (again, maximum of 12) together, you can work with Chef Alex to schedule a private party! That way, you also get to choose what type of food you want to make (sushi, Mediterranean, Spanish Tapas, Italian, etc.).
I definitely recommend trying this place out. I promise, you'll leave with a happy stomach! Actually, no... I don't. I did, at least. But you might be the unlucky one that has a really bad cook in your group. Still worth the experience, though!!

Went for a friend's birthday celebration and had an amazing time. We were a large group (18) And chef Alex still managed to spend time with each of us, helping us or offering suggestions. The food turned out amazing and there was plenty of it for all of us to leave stuffed with lots of leftovers to take home! Wonderful experience, we would definitely do it again!
