Rock Climbing at Joshua Tree for 8 Hours April 24, 2017We loved our day of rock climbing with Nelson! Adults and kids (11 and 13) had equal fun. Our 11 year old who has rock climbed in a gym for two years, and is very accomplished, so Nelson gave her some extra challenging climbs, while the rest of us (beginners) felt comfortable, yet challenged, and safe. Throughout our 9 days trip to CA, and 5 in Joshua Tree, this was our absolute highlight! Highly recommended!

Rock Climbing at Joshua Tree for 4 Hours April 5, 2017Tyler was amazing! (I had to say that right off the bat bc it's so true!) Nick and I have been climbing in a gym for a little under two months but wanted to transition to outdoor climbing. We decided to get a guide while we were at Joshua Tree because, well, it's freakin' JTree. We met up with Tyler this past Monday for a 4hr session. (I wish we had done longer!!!) And we haven't been able to stop discussing our experience or how awesome Tyler was since then.
Tyler is fantastic. He is super knowledgeable and really encouraging. He took us over to the Hidden Valley area for two routes and a crash course in anchoring. We had fun the whole time. I learned so much from technique, to gear, to history of climbing. He really knows his stuff and is passionate about it. His enthusiasm is contagious.
He also brought a camera to take pictures for us which is so cool. And he gave us his contact info in case we ever had questions, which is super rad. You can tell how much joy he gets from climbing and that he wants that for you. All three of us were nothing but smiles the whole time. Even when I got tired at the end he continued to mentor and encourage.
One of my favorite things was how he let us figure out our own way up each route and only when we were stuck did he point out holds. Sometimes we would try something and it wouldn't work so he'd show us a better way. But he always let us try first. I really liked that. I left the day feeling super pumped about climbing and wishing that Tyler lived by us so he could continue to guide us as we progress on this outdoor climbing adventure.
I'd also like to note that Nelson, the owner, was amazing in terms of getting us booked with Tyler. He emailed us and took the time to find out what experience we were looking for and what our background was so that they could tailor everything to us.
I definitely recommend this company. Get Tyler as a guide! I'm already planning when I can come back to tackle more! Thank you for the wonderful experience! -

Rock Climbing at Joshua Tree for 4 Hours March 25, 2017I've gone down to Joshua Tree to climb with the Climbing Life Guides twice, and both times I had a blast. I highly recommend hiring Nelson and/or one of the other guides at The Climbing Life. The guides are knowledgeable and personable, but most importantly, they are fun!

Rock Climbing at Joshua Tree for 6 Hours February 25, 2017I've had two wonderful climbing experiences with Nelson (The Climbing Life Guides) at Joshua Tree. I'm 63, and this was my first climbing experience so I was nervous about attempting this challenge. I wasn't expecting much of myself, in fact I told Nelson I'd be happy if I just had the experience of putting on the gear and climbing up a few feet--then call it a day. But instead, with such great humor and encouragement from Nelson, I made it to the top of a complicated rock the first day, and climbed all three faces of that same rock the second time we went out. It was exhilarating, beautiful and challenging. The views and the serenity from atop a rock are probably why climbers come back for more. I had no fear or loss of balance... only a deep peace and desire to stay right there. I sure got the climbing fever now.
I think the important thing is that I knew I was safe. The ropes were secure, and I knew that Nelson wasn't taking chances. All along he was coaching me where to place my feet and angle my body so that I could navigate the various aspects of the rock.
I'm also a Type 1 (insulin dependent) diabetic, so I needed some patience while I experimented with my blood sugar needs during this outdoor challenge. Nelson was just wonderful, and we took it slow.
WOW what an experience. I will be back soon! And what a wonderful guy Nelson is! -

Rock Climbing at Joshua Tree for 4 Hours February 24, 2017Nelson was truly PHENOMENAL. My boyfriend Josh & I hired him for a 4-hour afternoon climb as our first outdoor, non-gym climbing experience. Nelson and his friend Andrew he brought along were extremely chill, humble, and fun. Nelson was not only a climbing expert that we felt 1000% safe with, but also a great coach / teacher who gave awesome helpful tips and kept our attitudes positive on difficult climbs. I'd highly recommend hiring him. Thank you Nelson!

Rock Climbing at Joshua Tree for 8 Hours February 2, 2017I am a climber from australia, and I had one day to experience Jtree rock. Hiring a guide is perfect if you lack the time but want to experience the essence of climbing at Jtree. My goal was to climb as many starred, easy-moderate routes in as varied terrain as possible. And that's what I got from Nelson, and I had a ball! He was so nice to drive me around in his car because I let my family have our car to tour around elsewhere that day. He is easy going, totally professional and super safe, and I appreciated his interest in helping me improve my crack climbing techniques (which I desperately needed!). Hire Nelson for your next climbing experience - you won't regret it!

Rock Climbing at Joshua Tree for 4 Hours January 10, 2017Twenty-five years after last rock climbing in Joshua Tree, my wife and I decided to take our three kids (18, 16 and 11) there for a climbing adventure. Knowing the complexities of gear, matching a good route for their collective skill sets, the importance of safety and the fact it had been years since we last climbed...we decided to hire a guide service. The Climbing Life Guides were highly rated online so after researching a few options we decided to book a four-hour session.
The entire experience from booking to the end of the day exceeded expectations! Their communications, responsiveness and instructions were clear leading up to the day of the climb. We were matched with Tyler as our guide and from the first moment we connected the experience was top notch! We met at their main location and got 'geared-up' then took the short drive into the park. He coached the kids on safety, techniques and etiquette. It was a pleasure (as a parent) listening to him encourage and cheer each one on as they ascended the first route. All made it to the top and decided after-the-fact that this outing was the highlight of our vacation. Thanks for the wonderful confidence building experience Tyler! -

Rock Climbing at Joshua Tree for 6 Hours January 3, 2017My boyfriend and I booked a private half day climb with Nelson after having climbed in an indoor gym once. He taught us so much about how to interact with a rock face, the differences between indoor and outdoor climbing, about the equipment, different types of climbing, etc. We totally chewed his ear off and learned so much, and of course, we had a total blast climbing our first rocks. We felt incredibly safe the entire time and felt comfortable pushing our limits. Nelson was really good about showing us different holds we could try on different points of the rock to challenge ourselves. Joshua Tree is such a beautiful place and the views from the top are so amazing. We'll for sure be climbing with them again!

Rock Climbing at Joshua Tree for 6 Hours November 21, 2016Nelson and Tyler were great. They took my 9 yr old son, 17 yr old son and my husband and myself on a 6 hour trip. We climbed tons within that time! My 9 yr old went from being hesitant and fearful to fearless and accomplished. They gave us great direction and were patient but pushed us as well. They were very professional and helpful. I did my research first and found they are also the most affordable...but with great reviews. I would highly recommend them.

Rock Climbing at Joshua Tree for 6 Hours May 10, 2016My wife joined me on a climbing trip in Joshua Tree and we booked our guide through Nelson at The Climbing Life Guides. My wife had never climbed before and Nelson was not only a great guide but a wonderful teacher as she made successful climbs, learned, and had a great day. We did the 1/2 day which was enough time for us to have fun, see the scenery, and have a good session.

Rock Climbing at Joshua Tree for 8 Hours March 10, 2016My husband and I went climbing with Nelson for a 4 hour and 8 hour session. It was awesome. We have enough climbing experience to know just how risky it can be so finding an experienced guide that emphasized safety was the most important thing to us.
Nelson has really set the standard incredibly high for any of the guides we hire in future climbing trips in other places. He double and triple checks everything and puts safety first. I am so glad our first real climbing experience was with Nelson because now we know what to look for in other guides.
He's also a great teacher, very encouraging and just loves to share his passion with his clients. He showed us a variety of climbs that were fitting for our levels while still challenging us. We also did some skill work at the end which was very helpful.
There is no doubt that Nelson is the first person we will call the next time we return to jtree! -

Rock Climbing at Joshua Tree for 8 Hours February 29, 2016We spent a day climbing in Joshua Tree with Nelson. He was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and personably. Our kids are both on a climbing team and he took them on climbs that were appropriate to their level. He was very safety conscious - making us feel really comfortable too. He made it a fun day for all of us. Definitely the highlight of the trip. We can't wait to go back to Joshua Tree to climb with Nelson again. We highly recommend the Climbing Life Guides!

Rock Climbing at Joshua Tree for 4 Hours January 28, 2016I had an awesome experience climbing with Nelson this past Monday. I'm a fairly experienced indoor climber, having bouldered & top-roped for over a year. I had never climbed outdoors before Monday. Nelson used this information to plan an awesome day for us, starting with a 5.7 and working up to a 5.10.
He did a very good job at assessing my ability, teaching me new skills, and trusting me when appropriate. He's very careful. Note that this isn't a walk in the park: you're likely going to have to lead-belay your guide, whose life will more or less be in your hands. It's authentic.
Nelson is a great guy, who truly cares about his customers. From what he explained, he also treats employees very well, offering benefits rare to a business like his (He explained this without showing off).
I booked a 4-hour session, because I thought I'd be too tired after that much climbing. Since so much of the time is spent setting things up (which is also fun), I definitely could have done 6 hours, maybe 8.
After we finished climbing (and our time was up), Nelson went out of his way to show me a nearby bouldering spot, which would be safe a safe place to climb alone & great place to meet people (It's called Gunsmoke Traverse, check it out). I went the next day and had a great time with some cool people. Again, this guy really cares about his customers. -

Rock Climbing at Joshua Tree for 4 Hours January 11, 2016This was our first trip to Joshua tree and I wanted to do something super fun. I'm so glad I booked with The Climb Life Guides because Nelson was amazing on 4 hour guide. Couldn't have asked for a more pleasant, educated, and enthusiastic instructor/guide to ease my worries about climbing for the first time. Thank you for making our first trip to Joshua Tree something to remember.

Rock Climbing at Joshua Tree for 8 Hours April 17, 2015It's been three days since we climbed with Nelson and we're still singing his praises. My husband and I joined him on a FULL day adventure in Joshua Tree. He planned an ideal tour for us that suited our climbing level and interests. We felt safe and encouraged each step along the way while climbing routes we would never have thought were possible. Nelson breaks down his instructions so they are easy to understand. By the end of the day we got experience and insights on handling ropes for multi-pitch climbs and how to climb cracks, chimneys, mantels and smeary rock faces. He's a fun and interesting guy to spend 10 hours with.

Rock Climbing at Joshua Tree for 8 Hours January 22, 2015My boyfriend and I climbed with Nelson for a day in Joshua Tree. We had an epic time and learned more than we could have hoped for. We are just pushing into leading and Nelson encouraged us further than we had expected to go. We practiced lead falls, became totally solid on cleaning and led our first ever climbs outside. Nelson was a wonderful combination of instructive, relaxed, encouraging and just plain fun. Thanks Nelson!

Rock Climbing at Joshua Tree for 8 Hours November 23, 2014Nelson was the perfect guide, friendly and professional. He took us rock climbing, rappelling, and through a semi-secret chasm. He reviewed belaying technique, set up multiple climbing routes and gave us tips and guidance. We booked him for a 8-hour session and he stayed hours after to let us climb more and go through the chasm of doom in the dark. (Bring flashlights and headlights.) I would recommend Nelson to everyone.

Rock Climbing at Joshua Tree for 8 Hours June 5, 2014Rock climbing in Joshua Tree National Park with Nelson (The Climbing Life Guides) as my guide was a sublime experience. Everything was meticulously planned and executed with perfection. I got to rappel from a really cool cliff! I have always wanted to hire a guide and go rock climbing in Joshua Tree and my day couldn't have gone better. Thank you, Nelson for an awesome experience! I will be back.

Rock Climbing at Joshua Tree for 6 Hours April 15, 2014Finding a way to arrange a rock-climbing outing with three young kids (7, 5, and 3) may seem impossible, but Nelson handled all the arrangements perfectly. I have always wanted to rock climb, and when our family visited Joshua Tree the timing seemed right given the park's world-class reputation. My one condition was that I wanted it to be a family experience in some way, even though I would be the only one climbing.
Nelson did an AMAZING JOB setting up a morning that was memorable and exciting for everyone. He chose two climbs in the Intersection Rock area that were close to restrooms, would have plenty of interesting boulders for the kids to climb as my wife stayed with them, and gave everyone great views of the climbing I would be doing.
Having almost no rock-climbing experience myself, I really appreciated how Nelson found just the right mix of comfort and challenge for my climbs. He really picked up on the kind of experience I would most enjoy (even though I couldn't put it into words myself), and he didn't dwell too much on the technical aspects and instead put the emphasis on the climbing itself. I really found his enthusiasm for climbing contagious, and it was clear that he really enjoys sharing in the new-found confidence and successes of his clients.
The highlight for everyone was a short hike Nelson led us on to reach the same rock formation I had just climbed and repelled down. Sitting in the "Eye" and peering out at the beautiful desert landscape of Joshua Tree as a family is a memory all of us will always remember fondly :) -
