After a brief safety orientation, hop on your horse and follow your guide on a 2-hour ride along scenic trails. Ride to the top of Mt Hollywood, the tallest peak in Griffith Park. Spot the famous domed Griffith Park Observatory, and then stop to savor jaw-dropping, sweeping 360-degree views of Los Angeles County. Horseback Riding Tour to the Hollywood Sign June 8, 2017My 6 year old daughter is obsessed with horses and really, really, really, wanted to ride a horse. She has a rocking pony at home that she saddles and rides daily. We came to LA from New York for a visit and decided to surprise her and our family of four, including our 11 year old daughter.
After doing research we decided to go with Los Angeles Horseback Riding. The online reviews seemed outstanding. My daughters have been on ponies at the local fair and I had ridden horses a few times. My wife had never ridden and expressed deep apprehension. It seemed the day would go south quickly as once she mounted her horse, he seemed to want no part of it. Enter our world-class guide, Josh.
Josh spent a considerable amount of time bonding with my family and providing pre ride instructions. He was brilliant at matching horse to person and seeing my wife's anxiety, changed the order to the trail, by having her ride directly behind him. As we approached the mountains, the trail seemed overwhelming. We may have wondered why we took on the Santa Monica mountains as our first foray into family horse riding.
Happy to say this instantly became a top 3 all time family event. It was exhilarating and we are still talking about it a day later. The picture Josh took of us at the summit is now my screen saver photo. We want to make this a regular family event every few months and will insist on the same group: horses Bo, Major, Barney and Ricky and without question, our capable and brilliant guide, Josh.
The staff is great too and Carmen, Kimberly and the others made us feel at home. If you are going horse back riding in LA, you will not do better than the Los Angeles Horseback riding team. Make sure you ask for Josh as your guide.

Horseback Riding Tour to the Hollywood Sign June 8, 2017This was the surprise highlight of our LA trip. Truly a wonderful, relaxing way to slow down in a high-energy metropolis. Definitely take the 2 hour tour! Our guide name forgotten, she had blond hair, probably in 20's was very friendly and knowledgeable about the area, and was very in control of all of the horses. The horses follow each other single file up the trail to the top of the mountain, with that said, if you are looking to have involved conversation, might be difficult. The guide cycled around on her horse explaining what we were seeing and getting to know us. The horses move at a VERY gentle pace most hikers were passing us, which gives you time to enjoy the views. We went in winter so it was quite temperate if you go in spring/summer/fall make sure to bring a hat and sunblock as there isn't much shade. The view opens up at the very top of the trail and is truly worth the ride up. The horses have a lot of personality and occasional gas and were very mellow and sweet. Our guide seemed to match our personalities with our horses I'm not kidding. We didn't want our tour to end.
