Not only is Elmhurst Queens’ second Chinatown, it’s also home to a thriving Southeast Asian community. Tour and eat your way through the area’s Indonesian, Vietnamese, and Thai markets and restaurants. You’ll sample Indonesian dishes like creamy stewed jackfruit and crunchy keripik kentang kacang manis, Indonesia’s sweet, spicy, and savory take on potato chips, at Java Village. Then it’s time to tuck into a Vietnamese sandwich at JoJu while sipping a salty lemonade. You’ll be able to browse the aisles at Thai Thai for ingredients like kaffir lime leaves, curry pastes, and Thai tea powder and sample such Thai delicacies as kluay khak -- a delectable mixture of fried taro, sweet potato, and plantain. Making for a full cultural experience, you will also be able to pay your respects to the Emerald Buddha at a nearby Thai temple.
