Ice Cave & Waterfalls -- Union Square

What to expect
  • See ice caves and waterfalls on a trip from New York City to Verkeerder Falls
  • Enjoy panoramic views of the Shawangunks along the way
  • Come home feeling refreshed and ready to return to civilization
Ice caves sound like something you can only experience on an adventure in a country that measures its temperature in Celsius. But on this journey, you’ll be departing from New York City of all places, and enjoy a breakfast of bagels as you depart to Verkeerder Falls! Along the way, see panoramic views of the Shawangunks. Hike along the trail (which can occasionally be rocky and muddy) and pick wild blueberries as you hike up the trail. Eventually you’ll reach the ice caves, which are actual caves that are icy year-round! It’s a great way to experience sights you wouldn’t expect to find so close to home.

Note: The difficulty level of this hike is easy to moderate: If you are just looking for an easy walk in the woods, are new to hiking, or are simply unsure of your level of conditioning, this is the level of hike recommended. These hikes may still feature distances of between 6-7 miles but there will be little elevation gain and the type of trail/path will be easy to walk on without worrying about stumbling over rocks, etc. Gear to Go Outfitters has teamed up with Blue Apron Foods to offer boxed lunches that are available for purchase the day of your trip.
