Secret Streets of NYC Bike Tour

Explore New York with an Expert Licensed Guide. This tour begins with a ride through Greenwich Village and a stop at the Stonewall Inn, birthplace of the gay rights movement of the 1960s and 70s. We then ride along the Hudson River Greenway to Wall Street. Then on to the World Trade Center, where the new tower rises tall —a monument to human despair and resilience. Crossing the Brooklyn Bridge, we learn the story of this glorious architectural wonder and, once in Brooklyn, discover the amazing history of an underground railroad stop. We’ll discover how unique churches, a few tropical fruits, and a fabulous hotel made Brooklyn Heights one of New York’s gems. Then back over the Manhattan Bridge and into Chinatown, where we find ourselves on a street where secret meetings were once held to overthrow the dynasties of China and, later, in an alley leading to the site of one of New York’s strangest gang fights. Dim Sum cafés, street signs stacked one behind the other, and Chinese funeral parlors -- they’re all here. Finally, ride through a thin strip of territory that was once a very big Little Italy. As waiters serve pasta and saltimbocca in open-air cafes, where, only one floor above, other residents are burning incense and setting aside fruits as offerings to the Buddha.

    Italian Masters of the Met

    (1)
Five centuries of Italian art. One world-famous museum. Unless you know what you're looking for, the Metropolitan Museum of Art can be an overwhelming experience. During this expertly guided tour, you'll get straight to the romantic heart of the matter as you explore its Italian galleries in depth. Things kick off with a look at 14th-century legends Duccio and Giotto, who helped spur the naturalism movement at the behest of the Franciscan and Dominican orders. This seminal shift in the arts changed the focus to more realistic representations -- a movement further developed over the course of latter centuries by artists such as Botticelli. Your journey will then move into the High Renaissance with a look at the 16th century, when these same naturalistic techniques hit incredible new heights. You'll also look at the Venetian approach to art, favored by painters such as Giovanni Bellini, Titian, Veronese and Tintoretto. Next up, Mannerism: a stirring evolution of the styles popularized by the Renaissance, led by Bronzino and Parmigianino. Then, you'll witness the return to naturalism and classicism by early Baroque greats Caravaggio and Annibale Carracci, and enjoy a more indepth look at how the Baroque era progressed through the hands of several other great painters, eventually growing into the 18th-century style of Rococo. When it comes to colorful experiences, Context Travel does it right!
