    Japanese Classical Dance (Nihon buyo)

    (2)
Born in 1603, Japanese classical dance, Nihon buyō, something all Kabuki actors must master, lets dancers interpret the poetry being sung to accompany music. For example, if song lyrics say, "it was very hot," you may fan yourself. Dressed in kimono and possibly using props like fans, umbrellas (kasa) or towels (tenugui), you and your partner will slowly and gracefully improvise this traditional Japanese dance, while interpreting the poetry. The dance is soft and sensual -- energetic for men and strong for women. But all together, it's as classical Japanese as it gets.
    Japanese Classical Dance (Nihon buyo)

44-02 23rd St, Long Island City

    • Learn classical Japanese dance that was founded in 1603
    • Listen to the poetry accompanying the music and interpret the meaning of each lyric
    • Dance energetically or sternly depending on the song
