And that you should boil water before you drink it... wait, you know how to start a fire without an ignite button, right? Exactly. You'd be about as useful in the wild as a dinosaur in a shopping mall. (Generally just in the way of things.) Well, don't get in nature's way. Have your way with nature, when you take this Wilderness Survival Clinic offered by Rare Earth Adventures. First of all, you're going to learn how to make a fire. That's an essential. But on top of that, you'll learn what you can and should absolutely not cook, where to take shelter, how to build a shelter out of few to no pre-planned items, what to do about the water situation, and tips for getting back to civilization. Moonlight Snowshoe

Sometimes we want to get a taste of the wild without that whole "wild" thing -- just a calm evening in the outdoors. Well, this is just the thing. In fact, some say this is one of the absolute MUST DO experiences in Portland. Snowshoeing in the moonlight is a magical experience that you can enjoy with a large group or one special person. Heck, even solo! It would certainly be good for reconnecting with your inner chi. You'll get to break your own trail, and then about an hour through you'll stop for some hot drinks and snacks while stargazing and storytelling. If you don't have any stories -- we assure you, your guide has heard a few! When you get back you'll have plenty of time to watch Cliffhanger and play some good ol' ATV Offroad Fury. That way you can have a different outdoors experience -- without actually doing so yourself.

    Navigation Fundamentals Clinic

Knowing where to go for lunch is one thing, but knowing where to go when you're just google-dropped into the center of the map is a different thing entirely. Let's face it; we're not built for survival in the wild. Our instincts are not what they used to be, after thousands of years of this pampered human indoor lifestyle. So you want to get back to the basics? Well you came to the right place: Navigation clinic. Discover the way of the... well, just the way, when you take this great introduction to navigation. You'll gain confidence on all future hikes, and you'll never wonder where north is again. You'll start with nomenclature and plotting. From there you'll hit the trail, navigating point-to-point, where each member of the group will conduct a navigation checklist, calculate distance, read the terrain on topographical maps, plot coordinates, determine pace count and estimate time. Throughout the day you'll practice route selection, circumnavigation and doglegs. Furthermore, you will experience the lost art of triangulation, where you will calculate the lines of position. You'll learn a bit about GPS's, such as how to use them in the field and how to conserve battery, and lastly, you will hit topics that include stick and shadow and celestial aids to navigation It is as the ancients say, "One can lose his or her lunch, but one can never lose his or her self.
