North Beach and Chinatown Evening Food Tour
September 11, 2014
We met Dan at the designated gate near Chinatown for our walking culinary tour. He was right on time and to our surprise, we were the only couple so we essentially got a personal tour. Dan is the perfect tour guide. He is full of great information, personal anecdotes, street cred, and humility. We were worried that our guide would be hopped up on red-bull, wearing flair and carrying a big foam hand, etc. Not Dan...way low key but super friendly. We ate in incredible places, were treated like locals, browsed Chinese markets with confidence, and then strolled North Beach finishing off the tour with wine, more great food, and Italian desserts. The tour was fast paced because we are energetic and game to hike to out of the way places, but he noted that he tailors the tour to the group every time. All in all, the tour ran quite long, but time flew and we wished we could have kept going...there was so much more to see! If you've been a Bay Area resident for years, as I have, but have never done such a tour, go for it! It's a great way to eat and explore your way through an area with an insider. Thanks Explore San Francisco, and THANK YOU DAN CHEW!!!

North Beach & Chinatown Food Tour

We had the best time on our Chinatown food tour. Dan Chew is so interesting and him being a native, we were able to experience things not normally seen on the usual tourist tour. I highly recommend this food tour.

The tour was a fun way to experience Chinatown. Not only was the food delicious but the tour was packed with history as well. Dan, our guide, gave us many insights into growing up in Chinatown with three generations of stories. He took us into places where locals eat and told us the stories of the establishments throughout the decades. We ate, we drank tea, we walked, and our eyes were filled with the many colorful sights of a place I had never experienced in that way. I would definitely recommend for someone from out of town and anyone who lives in the area who would like to experience the food, the people and the history of Chinatown.

North Beach and Chinatown Evening Food Tour

My teenage kids and I did a food tour lats week with Dan Chew. He was outstanding! Dan grew up in Chinatown and knows the scene inside and out. We went to 2 Chinese restaurants, a Fortune Cookie Factory, then 2 Italian places in North Beach followed by 2 places for dessert. Come hungry! Advice is to definitely bring bottled water (between the walking, eating and some of the food - you'll need it). I left stuffed and am 6'4 and can put it away. Dan was very friendly and knowledgeable. Takes to to a few authentic places off the beaten path. My and my kids loved and highly recommend this tour!

North Beach & Chinatown Food Tour

My wife and I booked a Food Tour of Chinatown / North Beach. We were the only ones who booked that night and therefore had a personal guide named Dan. This was the best food tour that we have ever done and the highlight of our trip. We appreciated spending time with Dan as he provided information about many different areas. We also enjoyed all of the food that we sampled and were not disappointed in any way. Having the opportunity to visit all of the different spots was the best way to see the city. We would highly recommend that you book a tour with this group as they absolutely know how to treat their customers right!

North Beach Food Tour
November 4, 2013
My wife and 2 teenage sons recently took the North Beach Food tour and had a very enjoyable time. Athough I grew up in the City, I didn't spend much time in the North Beach area (which most young kids shouldn't have been in the 70's..!). I loved the history and the ability to stroll through all the back streets of this historic neighborhood. Natives who grew up in the City rarely have opportunities to be "tourists". It's nice to see what the rest of the world loves to talk about...! The food was good, but it mainly gave us the desire to come back and spend more time and explore even more...

North Beach Food Tour

I recently took the North Beach Food Tour from Explore San Francisco. This was a great experience. Our guide was fun and she very knowledgeable. We got information on food history in North Beach plus some overall history of the neighborhood.
Food choices were great. Five stops plus a tasting. Time was given in between stops so we weren't too full.
One of the highlights of the tour was our ending spot. We went to the top of a parking garage in North Beach. Best view of North Beach and the Bay.
Loved this tour and plan on doing another Explore San Francisco Tour.
