Saints and Sinners French Quarter History Tour

    (16)
New Orleans is a hot, humid and sometimes unforgiving place where in the dead of summer the air takes on the quality of a crawfish boil. It is a long, drawn out fever that seeps into the bloodstream and compels even the sweetest from small town America to do obscene things. This is the real New Orleans which does not fit neatly into the category of "American" city. It is a black water port, Caribbean and lawless; settled by thieves, prostitutes, and the other criminally disposed. It is also Catholic and pious with Roman altars trimmed in gold. It is equally black magic, Voodoo, and the steady throb of African drums. New Orleans is sex and confession. It is sin and forgiveness. This is the place where God and the Devil shook hands so the party could go on. New Orleans is a city for the sinner and the saint. This is a tour that takes you through the sweat soaked madness of our best and worst. Get lost with us in this strange city and explore its dark past because this is NOT your grandmother's tour.

The must-do experience includes 20 minutes of on-ground tuition, followed by 30 minutes in the air under the watchful eye of the pilot -- an instructor certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Help control the plane during takeoff and landing, and enjoy your airborne time to take control and maneuver the plane through the skies! No license or prior experience is necessary. Meet your pilot at the Flight Academy of New Orleans, and spend the first 20 minutes of your experience learning about the pre-flight procedure that all pilots do before flying. Study the instrument panel to work out the different controls, learn about the engine start sequence, and chat through the basics of flying such as taxiing the aircraft and preparing for takeoff.

Then, head out to the ramp to step aboard your small sightseeing plane and take your seat in the cockpit. Under the watchful eye of the pilot sat at your side, launch the aircraft into the sky, and then enjoy roughly 30 minutes of free flying through the air.

Weave through the skies above the French Quarter, and see the mighty Mississippi River snaking through town.

    Cemetery and Voodoo Walking Tour

    (1)
Follow the ghosts of the numerous characters of New Orleans' mysterious past! Tour one of the city's most haunted cemeteries, St Louis Cemetery No. 1 and visit the tomb of the Voodoo Queen of New Orleans, Marie Laveau. Your guide will explain the unique above-ground burial custom and will give you an in-depth overview of the fascinating evolution of voodoo. Haunting adventures await you during this cemetery and voodoo walking tour through New Orleans. Follow your guide through St Louis Cemetery No. 1, the oldest and most famous of the three St Louis cemeteries. You may recall it as the site from the classic movie Easy Rider or perhaps by its most notorious 'resident' Marie Laveau, the late Voodoo Queen of New Orleans.

Your professional guide will recount the background of both the famous and infamous people who are buried there. You can make a wish or, if you dare, cast a spell at the tomb of Marie Laveau. Hear spooky stories of how this voodoo master was able to be in two places at once. You'll also learn about New Orleans' unique above-ground burial custom and hear various society tombs--grand mausoleums built to entomb and commemorate members of professional, benevolent, and ethnic organizations. These macabre monuments include the Italian Mutual Benevolent Society tomb which provided the eerie backdrop for Easy Rider.

Throughout your tour, you'll get an in-depth view at the evolution of voodoo -- the practice of witchcraft with an African religious heritage. Often dismissed as a cult or superstition, plenty of New Orleans residents believe in its powers. Voodoo rites and traditions are still observed. Small shops sell tools of the trade with herbs, oils, powders, candles and more recognizable items such as voodoo dolls and gris-gris--voodoo amulets. By the end of your tour, you'll understand the meaning of the gris-gris as well as take home some voodoo charms of your own with the mysterious objects found in your souvenir bag!
