    Critters at the Water's Edge

    If you like getting your feet wet, this adventure is for you! You'll begin your adventure with a brief orientation, including a safety discussion, land lesson, and a primer on how to figure out where you are in the watershed. Then, you're off to explore! You'll enjoy the soft breeze of the Piscataway Creek and the overall calm of the Potomac River, a welcome break from the bustle of the city. You'll also discover the exciting variety of local wildlife. There will be an array of birds, including bald eagles, osprey, and great blue herons. You'll also see many different edible and medicinal plants! Once you're on land, you'll explore the various critters on the beach! You can even get out nets to comb the waters! After your beach exploration, you'll kayak back to the nature center for a brief wrap-up activity, during which you'll have time to munch on a snack you've brought from home. Come indulge in some adventure to spruce up your week!

    As a first time "SUPer," you will learn the basic skills necessary to enjoy stand-up paddleboarding safely and efficiently in this 60-90 minute introductory session! During the dry land portion, you'll learn about the equipment, review safety techniques, and practice paddling basics. Then, venture out into the water under the instruction of an expert, where you'll progress slowly but surely from paddling on your knees to standing up straight. You'll practice a proper and efficient forward stroke as well as how to turn and stop your board. But most importantly of all, you'll have FUN!
